This took me some time to find how to change the address using the online portal for the Portal das Finanças (Finance Portal) of Portugal. Writing them below for future references.

To change address:
You will receive the confirmation code by post to the new address in 5 days. Once you have received the code by post, to confirm the change address, visit the index page:
If you have any specific questions or require assistance, I recommend you contact them online using their support system, known as e-Balcao.
They are quite helpful, although they may take as long as a month to reply based on the time of the year. They get quite busy during the tax filing season. It helps if you ask your question in Portuguese though - even with the help of Google Translate, if you could not find someone who can speak Portuguese to help you.
Update as of 2021 January: From a comment below, I learn that the new link is, https://sitfiscal.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt/pessoal/morada/alterarMoradaSingularesForm1 Please use this link if the above links do not work anymore. I do not live in Portugal currently. As such, I am unfortunately not up to date with these latest changes.

DeleteMy solicitor registered this for me before I moved to Portugal and now I want to change it to my Portuguese address but that page can only select countries outside Portugal. Should I not be able to select Portugal here?
ReplyDeleteThat's weird. Check again. Probably Portugal is the first country in the list while you are checking for its place following the alphabetical order.

ReplyDeleteI don't think you can change the address to a foreign address or cancel the residency online. I can be wrong. But these are very complex things. You can ask this question directly from their e-balcao. It will of course take them several days to reply. Rather, send an authorized person to get it done for you.
DeleteI also find that Portugal is not an option. I think you have to go to financas office to register as a tax residence, even if you have nif already

It wasn't necessary in 2017 when I tried, if I remember correctly. Things could have changed. But I think, you can just try to change online and see if that works.

ReplyDeleteThe changing online is for Tax purposes as far as I know. Things may have improved. But I wouldn't assume it automatically changes the address in the car registration. Best to ask their e-balcao (or if you are in Portugal, you may just pay them a visit anyway).

DeleteThis is very helpful but I've encountered an issue. I got my NIF using a foreign address and so need to change it as I now have Portugese residency but when I put my NIF number in and my new address to get the number sent to my Portuguese address it says the address they have is not the same address as the address with the Financas and tells me to go to my nearest one to change it there. I thought that was what this is for.
ReplyDeleteThat's strange. My only guess is, it is different because you are changing countries? Perhaps, they want to see you for the first time since you moved (?).

DeleteI have the same issue as the one you describe. I need to change my address to Portugal, did you manage to do it in the end? If you finally went to the Finanças office, which document did you bring as a proof of residency?
These links you provided seem to have changed in the last few days and now I can't access them. I clicked on the first link a few weeks ago and have now received the confirmation code by post but when I click on the second link to enter the code it goes to a different page and also now the first link is also showing an error.
ReplyDeleteThat is unfortunate that they have changed the interface. However, it is not totally unexpected. Exactly 4 years have passed since I wrote this blog post. No wonder that they have chosen to change their pages. If you happen to find the correct pages, I will be grateful if you post the correct links. I will then update the blog post, accordingly. Hello. I need to change my fiscal residency back to non resident as I am returning back to the UK. I accidentally provided my rental portugese address not realising this would change my status eligible to pay tax here. I logged online to the finacias portal but it only allows me to change to another portugese address. I only did this on 30th December. I am flying back to UK in 2 weeks and would really appreciate any help to sort this before I leave. thank you

Hello, I must move permanently back to my country in less than 2 weeks and I want to change my address from the portuguese address to the address in my home country and thus turn from resident to non-resident. Could you please give me any advice on what I should do? I cannot ask through ebalcao because it now requires a password and I cannot request for a password because I do not have access anymore to the portuguese address.

Hi, I have not come across that. That seems like something you have to do in person, with document verification. At least, you may need to send them the relevant supporting documentation. Can you ask them with the e-balcao?
